Assistance From The Barbara Leatherwood Foundation
At The Barbara Leatherwood Foundation, we understand the physical, emotional, & financial challenges that can come with an ovarian cancer diagnosis. We are dedicated to providing financial assistance to individuals affected by ovarian cancer, as well as to students dedicated to raising awareness & pursuing education in health & wellness fields. Below, you’ll find several grant/scholarship opportunities to help ease the burden & support your journey.
Available Financial Aid Programs
Our foundation offers five funding options, including two grants and three scholarships. Each program is designed to provide aid in unique circumstances & is awarded based on the foundation’s available funds.
Ovarian Cancer Medical Grant
This grant is designed to assist women with medical expenses related to gynecologic cancer. Accepted applicants in need of a transvaginal ultrasound, treatment & recovery procedures, medication, & other related expenses may receive partial or full coverage assistance to help with the cost.
Ovarian Cancer Expenses Grant
This grant aims to provide assistance for a wide range of needs to people experiencing financial difficulties due to an increase in medical expenses from gynecologic cancer related concerns. Accepted applicants may receive partial or full assistance for a range of cost of living needs including but not limited to: money for rent, food, child care, transportation, medical expenses, relocation/travel for medical purposes, etc.

The Leatherwood Nursing Scholarship Fund
Barbara Leatherwood was diagnosed with ovarian cancer towards the end of January 2014, at 61 years of age. After a long trialling year of testing & treatments, Barbara passed away on January 1st, 2015. Since her passing, Barbara Leatherwood Fight for the Cure was founded in 2019, & a scholarship fund named after Barbara was established designed to spread her generosity and life into those that need it most. This scholarship is open to all residents in the U.S. seeking a career in nursing.

The Contreras-Winnett Scholarship for Young Women
Scholarship amount: $300.00

In memory of Angie Contreras and Tracey Winnett, the foundation is proud to announce the opening of the Contreras-Winnett Scholarship. This scholarship is dedicated to assisting young women at Waxahachie High School (WHS).
About Angie Contreras:
Angie was a WHS graduate who courageously battled a rare, mixed-cell ovarian cancer. Despite her short fight—only five months after her diagnosis—Angie left a lasting impact on the foundation's mission after connecting with its members through an ovarian cancer fundraiser.
About Tracey Winnett:
Tracey bravely fought ovarian cancer for six years, enduring three recurrences. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Cami, with whom she owned a business in Waxahachie, TX. Tracey also adored her twin grandsons, Logan and Beck, who were the light of her life.
Eligibility:
This scholarship is open to all qualifying female students residing in and attending Waxahachie High School.

For Scholarships 1 and 2, applicants must be female high school seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher to qualify.
